Description

Underground Cable Fault Detection Using Arduino

Project Overview

The Underground Cable Fault Detection System using Arduino is an intelligent monitoring system designed to detect and locate faults in underground electrical cables accurately. Since underground cables are widely used in urban areas for safety and reliability, locating faults manually is time-consuming, costly, and difficult.

This project uses an Arduino microcontroller along with voltage/current sensing techniques to identify faults such as short circuit, open circuit, and ground fault, and display the approximate distance of the fault from the base station.

Working Principle

The system works on the principle of Ohm’s Law and voltage drop measurement.

  1. A low DC voltage is applied to the underground cable through a series resistor network.

  2. The Arduino continuously monitors the voltage across the cable.

  3. When a fault occurs:

    • The resistance of the cable changes.

    • A corresponding voltage drop is detected.

  4. Using predefined calculations, Arduino determines:

    • Type of fault (Line-to-ground, Line-to-line)

    • Approximate distance of the fault

  5. The fault information is displayed on an LCD screen.

  6. Indicators (LED/Buzzer) alert the user about the fault condition.
