Description

Automatic Street Lighting System Using Arduino and LDR – Full Project Description

The Automatic Street Lighting System using Arduino and LDR is a smart embedded-systems project designed to automatically control street lights based on ambient light conditions. The system turns ON street lights at night and OFF during daytime without any human intervention, thereby saving electrical energy and reducing operational costs.

This project demonstrates the practical application of sensors, microcontrollers, and automation technology in real-world infrastructure such as smart cities and energy-efficient street lighting systems.

Working Principle

The project operates using a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), which senses the intensity of surrounding light.

  • During daytime, sunlight falls on the LDR, reducing its resistance.

  • During nighttime or low-light conditions, the LDR resistance increases.

  • The Arduino continuously monitors the LDR value.

  • When light intensity falls below a predefined threshold, the Arduino automatically switches ON the street lights.

  • When sufficient light is detected again, the Arduino switches OFF the lights.

This automatic control eliminates manual switching and ensures lights operate only when required.

System Architecture
