Description

10K Ohm Potentiometer – Full Description

A 10K Ohm Potentiometer is a three-terminal variable resistor used to manually adjust voltage, current, or signal levels in electronic circuits. It allows smooth control of resistance from 0Ω to 10,000Ω (10 kilo-ohms) by rotating the shaft.

🔧 Basic Specifications

  • Resistance Value: 10KΩ (10,000 Ohms)

  • Type: Rotary Potentiometer

  • Terminals: 3 Pins

  • Power Rating: Usually 0.25W (¼ Watt)

  • Tolerance: ±10% or ±20% (depends on model)

  • Rotation Angle: Typically 270°

  • Shaft Type: Knurled / Split Shaft (for easy knob fitting)

  • Mounting Type: Panel mount or PCB mount

📌 Pin Configuration

It has 3 pins:

  1. Left Pin (Terminal 1) – One end of resistive track

  2. Middle Pin (Wiper) – Variable output

  3. Right Pin (Terminal 3) – Other end of resistive track

👉 When used as a voltage divider, all 3 pins are used.
👉 When used as a variable resistor (rheostat), only 2 pins are used (middle + one side).

⚙️ Working Principle

Inside the potentiometer:

  • A carbon resistive track is connected between the two outer terminals.

  • A metal wiper (connected to the middle pin) slides over the resistive track when the shaft is rotated.

  • Turning the shaft changes the resistance between the middle pin and outer pins.

Example:

  • Rotate fully left → Near 0Ω between middle and one side

  • Rotate fully right → Near 10KΩ between middle and that side

📦 Common Applications

✅ Volume control in audio devices
✅ LCD contrast adjustment (Arduino 16×2 LCD)
✅ Speed control circuits
✅ Light dimmer circuits
✅ Sensor calibration
✅ Signal tuning

🔌 Usage Example (Arduino LCD Contrast)

  • Connect one outer pin to GND

  • Other outer pin to 5V

  • Middle pin to LCD V0 (Contrast pin)
Turning the knob adjusts display contrast.

🛠 Advantages

✔ Simple to use
✔ Low cost
✔ Smooth manual control
✔ Easy installation

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Do not exceed the power rating (usually 0.25W).

  • Avoid applying voltage higher than rated.
