Description

Low Cost Refrigeration System Using LPG

Overview

The Low Cost Refrigeration System Using LPG is an innovative and energy-efficient cooling system that utilizes Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as the primary refrigerant instead of conventional electric compressors. The project demonstrates how LPG’s rapid expansion and phase change properties can be effectively used to produce cooling at a significantly lower operating cost, making it suitable for rural, remote, and low-income areas where electricity availability is limited or expensive.

Objective

  • To design a cost-effective refrigeration system using LPG as an alternative refrigerant

  • To reduce electric power consumption compared to conventional refrigerators

  • To utilize eco-friendly and readily available fuel

  • To demonstrate a practical application of thermodynamics and heat transfer principles

Working Principle

The system works on the expansion cooling principle of LPG:

  1. LPG stored in a pressurized cylinder is passed through a control valve.

  2. When LPG expands through the valve, its pressure drops suddenly.

  3. Due to this pressure drop, the LPG absorbs heat from the surroundings.

  4. This heat absorption creates a cooling effect inside the refrigeration chamber.

  5. The cooled chamber can be used for storing food, medicines, or other temperature-sensitive items.

Unlike traditional systems, no electric compressor is required, which drastically reduces power consumption.

Main Components

  • LPG Cylinder – Source of refrigerant

  • Control Valve / Regulator – Controls gas flow and pressure

  • Cooling Chamber (Insulated Box) – Storage area for cooling

  • Copper Tubing / Expansion Line – For heat absorption

  • Safety Valves & Connectors – Prevent leakage and overpressure

  • Thermal Insulation – Minimizes heat loss

Key Features

  • ✅ Very low operating cost

  • ✅ Minimal electricity requirement

  • ✅ Simple construction and maintenance

  • ✅ Suitable for off-grid locations

  • ✅ Fast cooling response

  • ✅ Educational demonstration of refrigeration principles

Applications

  • Rural household refrigeration

  • Vaccine and medicine storage in remote areas

  • Small shops and street vendors

  • Emergency cooling during power failure

  • Engineering education and research projects

Advantages

  • Reduces dependency on electricity

  • LPG is easily available and affordable

  • Environmentally friendly compared to CFC-based refrigerants

  • Low initial and maintenance cost

  • Compact and portable design

Limitations

  • Requires strict safety measures due to LPG usage

  • Cooling capacity depends on gas flow control

  • Not suitable for large-scale industrial refrigeration

  • Proper ventilation is essential

Conclusion

The Low Cost Refrigeration System Using LPG is a practical and economical alternative to conventional refrigeration systems. It highlights how non-traditional energy sources can be effectively used for cooling applications. This project is especially beneficial for energy-scarce regions and serves as an excellent learning model for engineering students in the fields of thermodynamics, refrigeration, and sustainable energy systems.
